Technology Help for Whetstone Conference Attendees

by Jun 6, 2013ChurchLife, Tech5 comments

Minutes ago I finished presenting a brief session at my church’s pastor’s conference. In that session I focused on two very complicated pieces of Bible software: Logos and BibleWorks. I hit the highlights of their functionality, but I also tried to weave throughout the presentation some comments on the upsides and downsides of technology.

Whetstone attendees, I’m putting up some further resources for you if you found today’s session helpful.

Here are two video sessions on BibleWorks:

  • Beginner-Intermediate
  • Advanced

Here is one video session on Logos:

  • Logos Crash Course

And here is a two-part video series I did that touched on BibleWorks and Logos but spends much more significant time talking through what technology is—what it gives and what it takes away. (Please pardon the Calvinism/Arminian joke toward the beginning… Feel free to get me back in the comments if you felt slighted!)

  • Technology Giveth
  • Technology Taketh Away

    Hi, Mark. A few questions:

    1. Since you are an Apple guy, why haven’t you been as interested in Accordance? I’ve heard good things about it.

    2. Do you use the native Logos application?

    3. What about the native Mac application for BibleWorks?

    Just curious.

    1. It’s a great program. I’ve used it (I had a review copy which I gave away after writing the review). But I’ve never purchased it for two basic reasons: a) every time I compare prices, Accordance loses; and b) I prefer to see one verse at a time with various translations stacked on top of one another (a la BibleWorks) rather than multiple verses at a time stacked next to each other. It’s a small point, perhaps, but it’s the main thing I use BibleWorks for, so to me it’s significant.

    2. I do. I downloaded the Logos 5 engine a few weeks ago.

    3. I love it. It saves me from having to run Parallels or Fusion. Supposedly it’s missing some functionality (like 5%, I’ve read), but I purposefully did not read what that functionality was, and I haven’t come across it.

Mark, I am having trouble finding the link to downloading the L5 engine. Refuse to pay Logos’ confiscatory rates for “upgrading”.
